St Brigid’s students celebrate 160 years of Catholic education

STUDENTS from St Brigid’s primary school joined the Ipswich Catholic community on Sunday July 23 at the St Mary’s Church in Ipswich to celebrate 160 years of Catholic education.

His Grace, Archbishop Mark Coleridge presided with Ipswich Catholic Community Parish Priest Father Stephen Bliss.

Ipswich Catholic community Youth Minister Stewart England said that Catholic schools all over Queensland will be honouring and celebrating Catholic education week, through hosting activities and masses with their school communities.

“The three aspects that inspire our school communities are faith, hope and love, and all students are encouraged to celebrate and embrace this positive spirit with others,” he said.

“Since 1863, thousands of students and their families have joined our great community, following the traditions of many great people who have left an important legacy.

“We strive to follow the traditions of Mary Mother of Jesus, Edmund Rice, Catherine McAuley, the Christian Brothers, the Sisters of Mercy, St Joseph and St Brigid.

“Spirit, legacy and education is celebrated, while gifts are shared, in between songs, prays and readings.”

St Brigid’s students walked with their school banner and candle into the church, before delivering special messages and readings throughout the mass.

Principal Mia Curtis and other teaching staff joined the students.

Archbishop Coleridge said that it was an honour to join with the Ipswich community to celebrate such a special occasion.

“Together we celebrate the lasting devotion of Catholic education in our parish, and may we all go forward to continue to build, grow and flourish communities of faith, love and hope.”
