Letter to the Editor – Lanefield site a dangerous choice

re: Opportunities at Lanefield that are being looked into by the Ipswich City Council for a new facility to accommodate waste management.

In 2021, council received funding under the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program for the upgrade of its two refuse and recycling centres at Rosewood and Riverview.

Division 4 Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said council will explore options at the Rosewood site and external consultants have been engaged with expertise in waste infrastructure planning and design.

“They will conduct feasibility assessments and develop a concept design for a modern facility that can assist council and the community to improve resource recovery for purpose facilities that support a growing population into the future,” she told us.

But I have concerns about the possibility of closing down the existing Rosewood Refuse Transfer Station and the construction of a new permanent refuse transfer station at Lanefield.

The property at Lanefield is owned by the council and it was used by the former Moreton Shire Council to dispose of and bury night soil.

This was about 40 years ago before septic tanks and sewerage treatment plants.

Many local residents have major concerns and the local councillors have not been forth-coming with any helpful advice, other than to suggest that council has not made up its mind yet, and will listen to community advice, complaints and comments.

So far, I have not seen any updates on how the community can officially lodge feedback to the council, other than phone calls to the main number which in my opinion just end up forgotten in the abyss.

As far as I am concerned, this would be an extremely dangerous proposal to construct a facility that daily attracts many household, commercial and heavy vehicles to enter and exit from both the East and West directions at Lanefield.

This site is situated on a narrow main road with a 100 kilometre per hour speed limit on the crest of a hill, it is also a rural location recognised as a koala habitat.

I would like to see some official input from the local community for council’s consideration, before millions of dollars of ratepayer funds are committed to a totally inappropriate unsafe installation.
