New safety barriers installed at Anzac Park

ROSEWOOD Roosters Rugby League Club are enjoying the use of the $52,000 worth of nets at the Anzac Park sporting fields. 

The new 12m x 40m nets were installed by the Ipswich City Council following feedback from user groups regarding safety concerns and lost playing balls over the highly secured fence that runs along the railway line.

Rugby club President, Shane Brandley said that before the nets were installed the players would face problems when the ball was kicked over the railway line fence.

“The fence has long sharp razors on it, so on many occasions the balls would be kicked over the fence therefore remaining there because there was no way to retrieve it,” he said.

“Also, we have lost many balls because when the ball would land on the razors it would either pop or become damaged.

“Now the installation of these safety nets will prevent losing balls.”

Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan said the goalposts at Anzac Park meant that footballs were regularly being kicked out of play and into the adjacent rail corridor.

“The footballs looked unsightly laying on the train line and, because they could not be easily retrieved, there was an extra cost for players and the club in having to replace them.”

Cr Kate Kunzelmann said the club reached out to council and council was able to deliver a workable solution.
