Father’s Day celebrations on the track

FAMILIES and friends gathered at the Marburg Races last weekend to place a bet on their race favourites and to celebrate Father’s Day with the Marburg Pacing Association.

The race day consisted of eight races which included the special Harriot Memorial Next Week Pace and the Barastoc Race Feeds Family Challenge series.

Providing added entertainment were a jumping castle and other activities for the children which kept families happy as they celebrated the special person in their life for Father’s Day.

Racegoer Brendan John said he often goes to Marburg to place a bet and to have a cold one with his family while enjoying the country atmosphere which he described as inviting and friendly.

“Today I have come to the races with my wife and my two children, we enjoy picking out our favourite horse either by names or by their colours before cheering them on to the finish line,” he said.

“Father’s Day here is very relaxing, the children play with the activities supplied and meet new friends while my wife and I enjoy a cold drink and the famous Marburg burgers.”

Secretary of the Marburg Pacing Association Denis Smith said it is a great feeling to see families walking through the gates when the event has started for the day.

“When I turn around and see that families have a smile on their face while placing bets, having a drink and catching up with other people it is a feeling of success,” he said.

“There really is nothing like that social interaction on the race side line something that encourages the drivers and the horses to really give it their all to the finish line.

“Today is another great day to watch our local drivers and to support the volunteers who make these days a success, it is also a day to congratulate all of the fathers out there.”

As the weather held out into the afternoon, the day closed with excitement and bidding for assorted gifts with funny money vouchers that had been collected or won during the day.
