A LOCAL history buff wants to gain recognition for the Aboriginal People’s names for the various localities and geographical features in the region.
Rosewood History and Memories Group Convenor David Pahlke has most recently been researching the original name for Grandchester.
David said he found that well before Grandchester was known as Bigges Camp, the Aboriginal name for the area appears to have been ‘Goojabilla’, meaning Honey.
“I enjoy researching the history of the local areas,” he said.
“Recently I found out that Thagoona is the Aboriginal name for Piles and Rosewood was once called Boonooroo and Cowpanby which were Aboriginal names that meant Brigalow.
“There is a lot more to uncover,” he said.
“I would certainly like to see the original Aboriginal names for the local areas recognised on the township and locality signages, and I will be in contact with our local councillors to do so.”
