The day the dairying stopped

by Bill Yarrow

Yes, dairying was in my blood

Reminds me of old Steele Rudd.

Hardships you can sometimes endure,

To come through makes you feel pure.

I’d been dairying for a long time,

Sometimes the weather has been too fine.

Through it I’ve got a lot of pleasure,

Some thoughts that I’ll always treasure.

Do the best for the animals too,

They in turn will look after you.

If they are looked after right,

What they produce will surely delight.

Animals usually appreciate what you do,

Making life better for them too.

Usually they learn things well,

Mostly happy you can usually tell.

Sometimes too dry, other times too wet,

A good season is always a good bet.

Contrasting seasons are sent to test,

But with open spaces, we are surely blessed.

When you are doing the job you love,

You are really blessed from God above.

If you are happy in your job,

Makes is easier to earn a bob.

Modern technology and the new ideas,

Are nearly enough to bring on the tears.

So, I decided to call it quits,

Before I’d go right to bits.

The decision took a while to make,

We hope it’s quite right to take.

People say I won’t be so tied down,

Sometimes that only makes me frown.

I’ll have to settle into a new routine,

But animals still will surely be seen.

It reassures me though knowing,

I’ve done my share of dairying.

The tanker called the very last time,

On 31st August, nineteen ninety-nine.

A touch of sadness was felt sure,

For dairying we’ll do no more.
