Downpour leads to rapid increase in water levels

A HEAVY downpour on the public holiday last week caused rapid rises in water levels as the rain hit already saturated ground.

Rainfall reports indicated that Marburg received 24mm, Walloon 32mm and Rosewood 38mm

The water level in the Bremer River peaked in Walloon at 4.40 metres at 3:50pm on Friday resulting in the closure of the Five Mile Bridge. The Seven Mile Bridge at Rosewood remained open.

Flooding occurred over the Rosewood Warrill View Road, Mount Walker West Road and a large sink hole opened up in the middle of Kuss Road, Calvert.

“This is a timely reminder that the effects of the floods in February and May of this year are still having an impact on the river and creek levels and it only takes a small amount of rain for flooding to occur,” said Rosewood Police OIC Sgt Travis Ehrich.

Rosewood Police are encouraging residents to stay up to date with weather information.

“If flooding events do occur resulting in road closures, police ask that drivers slow down, and if roads are flooded, simply forget it,” he said.

“Large fines will be issued to drivers who cross flood waters, not only is this extremely dangerous but it also puts others in risk of serious injury or death.”
