Community venture comes to life

A NEW book swap box is now in place at the Rosewood service station.

The swap box concept was the brainchild of Year 11 student Jess Colgan was.

It is described as a ‘dream come true’ for Jess, who has been working with community members to create, build and place the library in its new location.

Jess said that creating the box was a community project, that was part of the University of Queensland’s Young Achievers Program.

“I saw a need for a book swap to share with the community in my home town of Rosewood and began to think of ways to make this happen,” she said.

“Turning my thoughts into action, I reached out to people in the Rosewood community to talk about my idea and together we co-ordinated the project.

“I really have a passion for my community, and also for books, so this project was a great way to share my interests while bringing the community together.

“A book swap is helpful because you do not have to buy the books, you just simply take a book that you have read to swap it for a book that you may be interested in.

“It is simple, easy and interactive.”

Russell from the Rosewood Men’s Shed built the box, Jess’ sister Haylee painted the roof of the box, and residents from Cabanda helped.

“Throughout this experience I believe I have made a difference by creating a space for likeminded people,” Jess said.

“I have really enjoyed engaging with community members and listening to their stories and experiences.”
