Bowling on the beat, fun day to spread important message

SPREADING awareness is the impetus behind a lawn bowls fun day planned by the Ipswich Crime Stoppers Volunteer Committee at the Rosewood Bowls Club.

The committee’s police representative Sergeant Nadine Webster said it was important to reinforce the Crime Stoppers phone number and ethos of anonymity.

“People who phone Crime Stoppers speak to paid employees and there are more than 29 volunteer committees across Queensland that help keep it going by raising funds and awareness,” Sgt Webster said.

“Our Ipswich volunteer committee are facilitating the fun day in support of it.

“All money raised will go towards the promotional side of things.”

She said the committee purchased signs, stickers for trucks and whatever else was needed to keep the Crime Stopper number front of mind.

“When people phone Crime Stoppers, the information that is provided is given to the police who then investigate further,” she said.

“The information is given completely anonymously so there is no fear of reprisal or retribution.

“From a policing point of view, it’s a very important.”

Sgt Webster has been part of the local Ipswich Area Committee for the past 17 years.

“[The committee] has been going for at least 25…maybe even 30 years,” she said.

“We try different community engagement events, late last year we had a 10 pin bowling night and this time we are having a lawn bowls day, which is all about family fun.”

The Lawn Bowls Fun Day is on Sunday, February 18 at Rosewood Bowls Club.

It starts at 9am for 9.30am on the green.

Tickets are $25 a person and that includes bowling and a burger.

Prebooking is important and tickets must be purchased by 4pm, February 14.
