Young Roosters rise in country battle

A ROSEWOOD Roosters rugby league team of the future even has a halfback named Alfie.

If young Alfie McTaggart plays anywhere near as good as his famous namesake Alfie Langer, the Roosters will have plenty to crow about.

Alfie scored the second try in his side’s latest 34-12 win over the Fassifern Bombers at Harrisville.

However, as Rosewood under-13 coach Cody Adams proudly declared, his main focus is team development.

“We started off a little bit slow but we’re slowly starting to build,” Adams said.

“Most pleasing is watching them grow … watching them start as a bunch of boys that are just there to play footy and turning into a team. That’s the best part of it.”

The win over Fassifern was Rosewood’s second for the Rugby League Ipswich season in the Development competition.

Adams is in his 13th year with the Roosters, having risen up through the junior ranks while growing up at Mutdapilly and now playing fullback or hooker for the club’s C-Grade side.

Cody’s brothers Joel and Conor also play in the C-Grade side.

Cody was guiding the under-13 team before heading back to Rosewood for the senior team’s game against Springfield. The Panthers upstaged the Roosters 36-6 at Anzac Park.

Despite that loss, Adams had plenty to be excited about after seeing the abundance of promise in the Roosters under-13 combination.

“It was watching them connect as a team and actually putting the things we learnt at training on to the field,” he said. “It’s definitely good to see.”

As a proud clubman, Adams is also sharing his experience with his nephew, niece and brothers as he develops his coaching career.

“It’s definitely a learning curve. That’s for sure,” the first-year junior coach said.

He loves everything a country club like Rosewood provides.

“We’re a bunch of blokes that come out, just like to play footy and go out there and have a good time.”
