‘Everyone Belongs’ is the message at Rosewood High

HARMONY Day was celebrated at Rosewood State High School last week with the message ‘Everyone Belongs’ to the forefront.

Tables were bursting with food from different cultures, plus there was face painting, games and activities – all with the aim of promoting the message.

In the lead up to the day, the Student Council made 500 orange ribbons, one for each student and staff member, to be worn to show solidarity that at Rosewood High everyone belongs.

Principal Nicole Sherlock said she was overwhelmed with the generosity from the community for their ongoing support, donations and the time that was given to ensure that the celebration was successful.

“This year’s event was the best that I had ever seen, small flags from countries all over the world were created, along with posters and decorations to brighten up the school environment,” she said.

“As part of the school’s well-being program, students explored what Harmony Day represents and how each student could play their part in breaking the cycle of discrimination and racism.

“Discussions focused on what it means to be respectful of people’s culture, how stereotypes can lead to unfair treatment and the idea that everyone belongs with a focus on inclusivity and respect was addressed.”

Community Education Counsellor Gloria Semple joined with the Elders to represent a First Nations perspective through making Johnny bread and fried scones as they reflected back in time to when the Elders received rations on missions.”
