Rosewood’s best poultry on show

MORE than 600 fowls were on show at the Rosewood showgrounds last week, as part of the Rosewood Poultry Club’s annual Orpington and Sussex breed feature show.

The event attracted breeders from all over Queensland.

Rosewood Poultry Club President Bruce Hodgson reported that it was an enjoyable day where people came from all over to share their knowledge and to be part of the Show.

“Our club has been going for many years and I have been a member for over 40 years,” he said.

“We have great members who are all so friendly and I really enjoy catching up with everybody.”

Preparing poultry for a Show takes a lot of preparation.

“My method involves having three tubs of water containing different solutions,” Bruce said.

“I wash them all first, then they get a rinse to kill any lice or pests, and then the white birds get a rinse in a special blue solution that brings out their colour, they then go in their cage in the sun to dry out.

“On the morning of the Show, they are transported to the event and go into a cage with fresh bedding and water all ready to be judged.

“I think they do enjoy all of the attention and detail that goes into it, they are very calm and deal with it very well.”

Club Patron, Dos Claus, has been involved for more than 60 years.

She says she always enjoys being involved and seeing all of the entries.

“My husband Clive was heavily involved in the club and he was a keen breeder.

“If he was here with us today, he would be extremely proud to see so many people still supporting the club and its annual Show.

“Clive bred almost every breed there is when it comes to fowls and poultry and we both shared this interest, it was something that we got so much enjoyment out of, and we did it together.

“Seeing the younger generations get involved and entering is very special because they will carry on the traditions for years to come.”

The Show attracted many families to the pavilion who walked around sharing comments about the different breeds.
