World class athletes on our doorstep

THE Australian Paralympic Cycling Team set up base in Rosewood to prepare for the 2022 Oceania Road Championships that took place on Rosewood – Warrill View Road on Saturday.

Paracycling Technical Director, Warren McDonald said the event “just came off the back of the Oceania Track Championships at the Chandler velodrome”.

“Some of the athletes here ride both track and road in the Paralympics and in Rosewood we had 11 out of the 12 athletes who competed in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics which is really exciting,” he said.

“These athletes shared many triumphs in the Tokyo games with some taking home the gold, silver and bronze medals in their individual events.”

The event in Rosewood on Saturday was an individual road time trial and the length of the race depended on the athlete’s impairments.

“Then on Sunday the athletes went on to compete in the Tour de Brisbane event which started from the Brisbane show grounds.”

On the track in Rosewood, the competitors were faced with headwinds and they referred to the road track as a rolling course.

“Each competitor put in an intense effort to compete against their own personal times and as a team we were excited to get back on the track as we are now preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics,” Warren said.
