Rosewood Lions Street Carnival cancelled due to forecast of heavy rain

THE wild and wet weather which was predicted to dump more flood rain on South East Queensland on Saturday led to the decision to cancel the Rosewood Lions Street Carnival.

Organiser, Lyall Mc Ewin said it was a difficult decision for the Lions members but safety had to come first.

“There is so much involved in making sure everything comes together for the event from organising entertainers and market stalls through to the rides and food stalls,” he said.

“This would have been our 40th year hosting the event, and the Lions really enjoy bringing happiness and fun to all of the families in the area.

“But with the amount of rain in the lead up to the event and with the prediction of more and chances of flooding it really was not safe to go ahead with it.”

Lyall said he and other Lions understood that the news of the cancellation would have had an impact on many community groups which use the event as a major fundraiser.

“In talking to the ride operators, the information that they shared with us was that they would be unable to operate any of the rides if there was rain, so that made our decision a bit easier, as the rides are a big part of our entertainment.

“At least 300 steaks that are all cut to size are to be ordered for our Lions burgers and 40 hams also have to be delivered, so the chance for waste was just too high.”
