Rosewood Men’s Shed lends a helping hand

THE Rosewood Men’s Shed have assisted Rosewood resident Tanya Johnson by making a device that is now connected to her mobility wheelchair to make her life a little easier each day.

Tanya said her wheelchair gives her a greater sense of freedom to get around and to take part in activities, though it was missing a device to help her reach certain items.

“During my every day activities, sadly sometimes I have a hard time doing the little things like picking up items that I may have dropped on the floor or reaching out for items from a higher or lower level of shelving,” she said.

“To assist me with these problems I purchased some metal tongs that I refer to as my ‘pick up sticks’.

“They come in handy when I cannot reach certain things.

“But where do I put them on my wheelchair I thought?”

For quite some time Tanya would place the tongs on her armrest with a hair band holding them in place.

“This strategy became awkward until I ran into a volunteer called Karl Wesner from the Rosewood Men’s Shed at the local markets,” she said.

“I raised my problems with Karl and explained how I suffer with trying to store my tongs on my wheelchair.

“He was very eager to help and recommended a special holder for the tongs.

“Measurements were made and a few days later, Karl gave me the holder made out of a plastic tube and attached it to my wheelchair.

“Problem solved, thanks to the Rosewood Men’s Shed.”
