Letter to the editor – Response to Thagoona roadworks

Adelong Avenue, Amaroo Road, Carara Avenue, Banyulah Road, Maleeh Avenue, Kanandah Court and Kipara Road formed a part of a rural subdivision in the 1970s.

In those days Ipswich City Council did not complete much drainage, footpath or kerb and channelling.

In fact, the roadways were often higher than the adjoining properties which in itself caused drainage issues.

I can recall when I first got elected in the Moreton District in the 1990s a very senior generational resident in Thagoona made a comment about when the subdivision went in, he complained and said, wait till it floods.

The big floods in 2008 came and showed us the flooding issues, even in the year of 2000, the roads were starting to deteriorate.

I received estimates of some $50,000,000,00 to totally rebuild and put in kerb and channel and footpaths.

About five to 10 years ago I managed to get the roads placed on the kerb and channelled list rather than simply resurfacing them.

Finally, Adelong Avenue was in the five-year budget plans to be totally reconstructed with kerb and channelling and the project was estimated to cost about $5,000,000.

It was to take place over two financial years from 2020 to 2022 and it was in place when I was dismissed from council in 2018.

These roads simply cannot be pot hole patched and surface sealed, they need to be totally reconstructed.

I inspected what they have done and council have not completed whole road works, it has really just returned it to the way it looked back in the 1970s.

No road widening or kerb and channelling, no footpaths or drainage.

My memory and thoughts.
