Backyard Lives

by Veronica Belcher

As I gaze out of the window

Of the train to work each day

I can see the backs of houses

Flying past along the way

There are old cars sitting silent

And there’s washing on the line

And an overgrown trellis

Sporting one or two grapevines

I can’t hear the dog that’s barking

But I can see it’s going spare

Running up and down the fence line

For an enemy not there

Chickens poking in the garden

Budgies chirping in their cage

Grandad mowing the long grass down

Takes his time, yes, shows his age

So many different scenes I witness

Of their lives I’ll never know

Just imagining their stories

With their backyard lives on show.
