Call for ‘safer solution’ for Royal George Lane

A ROSEWOOD laneway is a major blind spot for drivers when it becomes congested.

It’s a concern which has been raised by Rosewood resident, John Hedges.

Royal George Lane is home to two popular destinations in Rosewood, the Royal George Hotel and Jimmy’s Takeaway.

“The Royal George occupies the left-hand side of the laneway and Jimmy’s Takeaway occupies the right-hand side when looking towards John Street,” John said.

“My concern is the fact that there is a loading zone parking area situated directly out the front of the takeaway shop where trucks and large vehicles park.

“Once parked these vehicles take up half of the road making it almost impossible for the laneway to act as a two-way street. I think that this is dangerous and causes congestion.”

Recently John was a victim of an accident there when he was exiting the Royal George carpark onto Royal George Lane and on into John Street.

“The laneway was blocked by a bus that was parked near the loading zone and there was no room for myself or an incoming car on the opposite side of the road to come through causing an accident,” he said.

“Something really needs to be done.

“My suggestion would be to move the loading zone area to the back of the takeaway shop to create less congestion.

“A loading zone on a busy two-lane street causes impossible visibility, no passing opportunity and it restricts vehicles, also making it a one-way street could also be another safer option.”

With the population growing, the addition of housing estates and more people staying in their home towns due to Covid-19, John said this is a necessity because the streets are becoming busier and busier every day.
