Major club focus after cyclone passes

FIRST-time Rosewood Golf Club president Ken Parker shared the relief of members surveying the course after the recent major weather scare.

The 18-hole course on Karrabin-Rosewood Road escaped damage from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

One tree came down and some small fish and a big eel were washed out of a dam, providing an unusual sight on one of the fairways.

“We survived pretty well actually,” Ken said.

“The greens were all good.

“We didn’t have anything worse than normal flooding.

“No damage as such done to the course.”

Ken said the main impact was losing a week of golf waiting for the tail of the cyclone to arrive and sweep across the region.

Ken said the course was closed from the Thursday before the cyclone was due to deliver a mighty punch.

While that decision proved premature when Alfred stalled off the Queensland coast, Ken said it was important to protect the golfers from the potential risk.

“Safety first and we didn’t get the wind that was predicted thankfully,” he said.

Ken is serving as club president for the first time having been vice-president for two years working with former president Jamie Soppa.

The Ipswich born, Boonah-bred retired truck driver said he was settling into his new role having been with the Rosewood club for seven years.

“Everything’s going along all right,” he said.

With the cyclone drama over, Ken said the club’s main focus was preparing for the annual club championships over four Saturdays, starting in May.

Three men’s divisions and two ladies divisions are being staged, along with a seniors (over-70) competition.

“That’s always big every year,” Ken said.

Before that, regular club activities continue including handicap matchplay.

“Just keep everything running along and trying to organise things properly,” Ken said.

“Everything is ticking along as per normal so no real dramas.”
