Growing things and making it look pretty

THE Farm Produce Section is in the experienced hands of Elwyn Steinhardt and Tony Frohloff.

Tony and his wife Barbara are both involved in the Marburg Show.

Barbara is in charge of the Horticulture Section but is a big fan of what’s in the fruit and vegie displays.

She loves tomatoes, they’re her favourite vegetable or is that fruit?

“I joke that’s why I married my husband,” she said.

“He never ate tomatoes until he met me and he’s been eating them ever since.

“When we were courting, instead of bringing me a bunch of flowers he’d bring me tomatoes.”

Barbara has volunteered at the show for 35 years.

“My mum did it for 46 years and passed away the end of August last year,” she said.

“She handed the reins to me a year and a half ago.”

Her sister Heather was chief steward in the Farm Produce Section but she’s now helping Barbara.

“Two younger family members are working in Heather’s section now,” she said.

“My nephew Luke who is 20 and his 19-year-old fiancé.”

There are three longstanding exhibitors known for their work with roses, floral and displays.

“One is a lady who is 94-years-old and she’s been exhibiting for ages, I remember her when I was a kid,” she said.

“It is getting harder to find volunteers, especially the younger ones.

“Us older ones aren’t going to be around for ever and we don’t want the show to end because it’s our legacy and what our forefathers did.”

Classes in the Horticulture Section include roses, cut flowers, floral work, floral arrangements and pot plants.

Farm Produce Section includes entries of maize, seeds and grains, green fodder, pumpkins and a variety of fruit and vegetables.
