Free drought and climate adaptation workshops for local farmers

SCENIC RIM – Healthy Land and Water is hosting a series of free Drought and Climate Adaptation workshops in September in Beaudesert, Boonah and Gatton for graziers and dairy and fodder producers.

Guest speakers at the workshops will include representatives from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the University of Southern Queensland – Centre for Applied Climate Science on historic rainfall patterns, main climate drivers, the current seasonal outlook and latest forecasting information and tools to help inform planning and management decisions.

The workshops will also build on local experience to help landholders understand and identify risks of the longer-term climate impact on their farms and develop adaptation strategies and plans and transformative natural resource management practices for their properties.

Producers will be assisted in incorporating what they have learned into their property management plans to build resilience into their soils, pastures and farming systems.

According to a Healthy Land and Water spokeswoman, the natural resource management group’s Drought and Climate Adaptation program is assisting farmers to better prepare for and respond to drought and extreme climate events by providing relevant information and practical advice to help with decision making and management.

“The program is delivering a wide range of climate and land management information, tools and planning support to help landholders identify risk management and climate adaptation strategies for their properties.

“This program is being hosted by Healthy Land and Water, through funding provided from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.”

The workshops in the Scenic Rim are supported by Scenic Rim Regional Council, using $16,000 of grant funding provided from the Australian Government’s Drought Communities Program Extension.
