In search of a school’s time capsule

ST BRIGID’S Catholic Primary School Principal Duane Wann is on a mission to find a time capsule containing the school’s history.

It is believed the capsule is buried somewhere on the school grounds.

Mr Wann said the school will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next year as it was officially opened on January 30, 1922 by Archbishop Duhig, guided by the motto of, In Our God, We Grow.

“Foundation principal, Sister Mary Stephen, began to educate the children of the area, while fostering a vision of faith and the love of God,” he said.

“In the year of foundation, St Brigid’s boasted approximately 125 students and the need for the expansion of buildings soon came.

“A modern brick structure was completed in February 1989. A modular style building was added in 1991, after a fire destroyed one of the buildings in 1990.

“A library resource centre and another classroom were constructed in 1998.

“A preschool facility was opened in 2000 and it is now the prep learning space.

“In 2010 a multipurpose hall now called the Mercy Hall was erected.”

The Sisters of Mercy supported St Brigid’s over the years and it was described as a sad day when the sisters left the convent in 2011.

Mr Wann said that he is not sure of the exact year or location of the time capsule that was buried at the school, though there has been talk that it could be buried near a bottle tree planted at the front of the school grounds.

“While some staff members do have an idea as to where the capsule might be, I am putting a call out to anybody in the community to come forward with any information regarding its exact location,” he said.

The school community is blessed by a rich past and this capsule is such an iconic part of the school’s history, we would like to reveal it at the schools 100th anniversary celebration next year.”
