SCOUTS Region Commissioner Alex Mair has been awarded the Rosewood Toastmasters Communicator of the Year for 2021.
Group President Janet Spresser said she has known Alex for many years through her work with the Rosewood Girl Guides and through Alex’s work with the Rosewood Scout Group.
“Alex has volunteered his time and expertise to the Rosewood community for many years in particular through his time spent at the Rosewood Scouts,” she said.
“Over the years Alex has led the Scouts through training sessions, excursions and many activities to help and guide children into young adults.
“This year he was selected to be our Communicator of the Year by our members because he is a fantastic public speaker who holds and shares so much knowledge with others.”
Alex was presented with a special certificate by Janet while onlookers applauded his achievement at a special ceremony in the Rosewood CWA Hall.
Alex said he was honoured to attend the Toastmasters meeting and to be named the 2021 Communicator of the Year.
“Public speaking has been something that I have had to learn over the years and it has taken practise and persistence and lots of uncomfortable experiences to make me into the leader that I am today,” he said.
“Standing up in front of a group and talking is challenging and it is something that definitely takes all of your confidence to do.
“Through my work with the military I learned to overcome any feelings of uncertainty and gained confidence and leadership skills to be able to guide others.”
He added that his involvement in the Scouting movement had also helped.
“Scouts has provided me with a really rewarding opportunity to lead others and to teach others how to be confident through public speaking and leadership roles.
“Thank you to the Rosewood Toastmasters who are all such inspirational people that also have an amazing ability to speak in front of others.”
