Rebels boxer wins gold at National titles

REBELS boxers Livai Savuro and Joe Bennett recently represented Queensland in the Australian Boxing Titles, with Livai taking home the gold medal.

On the first day of the competition, Joe Bennet, 14, competed against Reef Sattler, 16, from New South Wales in the 52kg category.

Rebels Coach Robbie Sbeghen said Reef was a very aggressive boxer and he was there to win, however, Joe totally outclassed him and managed a conclusive win.

“On the second day, Joe was up against Jay Keating, 16, from Western Australia,” he said.

“Jay was a very different boxer who is very skilled and technical. Joe managed to get some great shots in however went down to a 3-2 points decision.”

Livai Savuro’s first competition was on the second day.

“He competed against Wayne Telepe from Victoria,” Robbie said.

“Wayne was a big puncher and a forward attacking boxer.

“Livai managed to slip and counter attack very well.

“The match was a classic boxer verses a brawler fight with Livai taking the win.”

On the third day of the titles, Livai went up against Anthony Capra from New South Wales.

“The two competitors had such a similar style it was spooky,” Robbie said.

“They were both very technical and very patient.

“The fight only came down to a few punches, and Livai’s speed and skill scored him the Gold Medal.”

Robbie added that Livai and Joe were proud to represent Queensland.

“It was a very big achievement for both of them, I am so proud of them, they are great young men with lots of talent.

“We have a challenge tournament coming up at the end of July then the big competition called the Golden Gloves event in August where we expect to field up to five athletes from Rebels.”
