Marburg Pacing Star prepares for overseas competition

MARBURG Pacing Association member Tim Gillespie will be representing Australia in the 2022 World Championship for Amateur Drivers Centennial Race in Rome in September this year.

Tim lives in Minden and has always been interested in harness racing, pacing and trotting. His early interest was inspired by watching his uncle Kevin O’Neill who is a harness racer.

Tim has been an amateur driver for 35 years. His home training ground is Marburg where he regularly competes and takes his horses to undergo training and preparation for race meets that he attends throughout Brisbane, in Marburg and at many annual shows.

“I really like Marburg because of the country atmosphere, the excited crowds and because of the friendly and supportive volunteers in the Marburg Pacing Association.”

Long time volunteer, Denis Smith, stands out to Tim in particular because of his dedication to the association and for his knowledge and experience.

Denis nominated Tim for the Centennial Race, something that Tim says he is extremely grateful for.

“When I heard the news that I was nominated to compete in this word class competition I was very excited and overwhelmed and it really meant a lot to me,” he said.

“The competition takes place in September and attracts participants from all over the world.

“Some of these include America, France, Italy and Spain.

“It will be a fantastic opportunity for me to learn different techniques and skills from other experienced drivers.”

For Tim, it will be his first overseas competition.

“My wife Debbie Gillespie will be travelling with me while my children Tammy and Corina will be staying at home.”

The three-day competition will start in Rome, Race 2 is in Torino and Race 3 is in Firenze. The horse will be selected for Tim and he will be looking for the win in each section.

“I have been busy watching different race styles to familiarise myself and to prepare myself for the competition.”
