Beautiful blooms and pops of colour

IMPRESSIVELY colourful garden beds planted with large established roses double as a living front fence and screen that draws families from the street to enjoy its natural beauty.

The green thumb behind the display is Rissi Wilkins, who has always had a passion for all things in the garden.

Now after many years of establishing the display she can admire the outcome of all her work.

Rissi said her garden is made up of all different types of roses.

“They all have a lovely scent which attracts bees and good insects for pollination,” she said.

“I do not believe that gardening should be hard.

“All of my plants are hardy and they basically look after themselves, despite lots of love and the occasional sprinkle with the hose.

“Once established, roses are quite easy to look after and all I do is maintain them with an annual prune and a good coating of sugar cane mulch.

“Families sometimes stop to look at the flowers and this gives me great satisfaction knowing that others enjoy the garden just as much as I do.”

It has not all been easy though as Rissi explains that this year the roses have struggled a little because of the large quantity of rain that the area has received.

“Roses do not like a lot of water.

“Too much rain is not good, this has been a challenge and a small set back that I have faced this year.

“Although there are many flowers, it does not compare to the previous years where the plants would just be overloaded.

“You just have to go with it though and be happy with what you have, so it has been nice to see some results.”

Rissi often shares her rose blooms with local residents and families at Cabanda Care.
