Subsidence closes waste bays but refuse site operational

RESIDENTS may have noticed some delays or changes at the Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centre, due to a subsidence issue that was detected in one of the waste bays.

As a result of the subsidence, Council closed one bay on May 18, and the rest of the bays were closed on May 19, with alternative bins put in place on the same day.

Ipswich City Council Mayor Teresa Harding reported that the Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centre was more than 30 years old.

“It is operating over capacity, and it should have been upgraded or replaced many years ago,” she said.

“Council has sought engineering advice on the safest way to proceed, and this advice has resulted in council closing the remaining waste bays as a precaution.

“Fortunately, recycling and green waste drop offs are not affected by this and council also continues to offer household waste drop off, albeit at a slightly reduced capacity.”

Cr Harding said repairs were already underway in the damaged bays.

“Council has already identified the need for an expanded facility to service the growing Rosewood, Thagoona and Walloon corridor.

“This will be coming to the community in the next few months to seek their views on a preferred location for the new site.”

Meanwhile, the refuse centre at Rosewood remains open and operational.

“Residents may be advised though, that in extremely busy periods or if they have very large loads, an alternative option is the larger centre at Riverview.”
