Council promises conditions on developer will overcome issues

MORE than 20 residents from the Thagoona area met with Deputy Mayor, Cr Russell Milligan and Council staff on Girral Road to discuss a large new residential development proposed for the area.

The development discussed has been proposed by Sargeant Planning for a subdivision that will include display housing, multiple residential and single housing allotments.

The main issues highlighted by the residents were impact on wildlife, the environment and neighbouring properties, current infrastructure and flooding issues.

Thagoona resident Steve Applegate said he has raised his concerns about road conditions and flooding issues in Thagoona to the Ipswich City Council numerous times.

“There are many issues to do with the current condition of the roads and the infrastructure that need to be addressed, before any kind of development is even considered in this area,” he said.

“In many previous rain events where there has been significant rain, many of the roads have been inundated with water, before water then flows into house yards causing huge issues.

“Building more housing will just cause more flooding issues and council also needs to maintain and unblock O’Shea’s Gully, which may provide relief in future rain events.”

In response to the residents’ concerns a Council representative said council has requested conditions to ensure that there will be no impact from flooding either upstream of downstream.

“There are many guidelines that the developer must follow, and necessary infrastructure must be adhered to, which includes a traffic assessment to assess the road conditions.

“We have qualified technical people working on this project, with all of our rainfall statistics being provided to council professionals from the Bureau of Meteorology.

“Anybody who has concerns must lodge properly made submissions to council which need to be made within the public notification period.

“These submissions need to include the name and address of the person making the submission and it needs to include planning matters associated with the application.

“Submissions that include matters such as crime, or statements such as, “we just do not like it” will not be considered, whereas topics such as traffic, noise, environmental issues and servicing issues are considered.”
