New Indigenous information board at trailhead

A NEW sign was unveiled at the Wulkuraka trailhead for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail featuring indigenous artwork by Charmaine Kucks from Connecting Locations and Generations with support from Tanya Smith of the Friends of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

The rail trail passes through the local authority areas of Ipswich, Somerset, Toowoomba and the South Burnett.

Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden attended the unveiling and said the Wulkuraka Trailhead was constructed at the southern end of the 161-kilometre-long rail trail by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

“Features at the trailhead are important and the artwork and information by Charmaine provides information on the rail trail from the viewpoint of our First Nation Peoples,” he said.

“I had been advised by Minister for Main Roads and Transport Mark Bailey, that the number of users of the area each month has increased from 178 in the month of September 2022 to 2,430 in May 2023.

“It is clear that the rail trail has become a recreational hotspot for walkers, bike riders and horse riders and that it has become a major tourist attraction and recreational facility.

“This trail is easily accessible with car park spaces, security monitoring, toilet blocks, drinking water and shaded picnic tables.

“Charmaine, Tanya and fellow members of the Friends of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail need to be congratulated for organising the unveiling ceremony and for their constant advocacy for improvements to the rail trail.”
