Search for copies of 1950s newspaper

ROSEWOOD residents David Pahlke and Bernie Kington are putting a call out to the community for any original, copies of, or information about the Rosewood, Marburg, Harrisville and District News.

The interest to gather more information about newspapers grew after David invited Specialist Librarian from the State Library of Queensland Reuben Hillier to his home to collect David’s personal collection of the Rosewood Register and Marburg Mail newspaper that was published from 1909 to 1940.

Following the visit, Bernie then shared part of his newspaper collection with David, and among many original local newspapers was the Australasian Newspaper dated September 21, 1872.

David said that included in Bernie’s collection were others that were more than 100 years old.

“It was great to see an original Rosewood, Marburg, Harrisville and District News that was originally called the Rosewood and Marburg News.

“The Rosewood, Marburg, Harrisville and District News was printed from 1956 to 1959 and after reading an article that was printed in the newspaper, it was suggested that the paper was struggling, hence why it only lasted three years,” he said.

“I would like to see if anybody else has an original or a copy of the newspaper, because Bernie and I would like to find out more about the contents and the paper itself.

“We are both also very interested to find out more about the publisher, LG Sleaford formerly of William Street in Rosewood.

“Did anybody know this man personally, or did anyone meet him?

“It is really great to have like-minded people in the community to work with to find out more about our rich history, so please reach out as we would really like to learn and find out more.”
