THE Rosewood Lions hosted the Club’s Youth of the Year quest last week and were delighted to welcome five entrants in the quest.

Timekeeper on the night and Club Secretary, Lyall McEwin said the Club was delighted with the number of students who entered the annual contest.

Emily Goodlet from West Moreton Anglican College was judged the Best Public Speaker and the overall Youth of the Year.

“It was a very interesting evening,” Lyall reported, “and was MCed by our President Bernie Newall and the three people who gave their time to judge the quest were Penni Boughen from the Rosewood Toastmasters, one of our local solicitors Moira Carruthers and Shaun Rushby who is an executive with Energex.”

And judging was no easy task for the judges nor for the entrants.

“Seventy percent of the points were awarded during hour long interviews with the students during Wednesday afternoon,” Lyall said.

“Then thirty percent of the points were awarded at the event on Wednesday night in front of the audience.”

That evening, the students were asked to speak on two impromptu topics and give a five minute set speech on a topic of their choice.

“The hard part is always the impromptu speeches.”

He congratulated all the entrants.

“Skye Crosswell’s prepared speech surprised us all,” Lyall said.

“We only learned at the start of the speech that her family’s home had burnt down two days before and they lost everything – they were left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.

“As a result, Skye’s speech was about how suddenly something can change your life”

He praised all the speakers for getting involved in the quest.

“Emily was a stand-out on the night and she will now go on to represent our Club at the Lions District finals in Boonah on Saturday, March 23.”
