HUNDREDS of people attended Marburg’s Anzac Day service last week, as roads were closed off and veterans, emergency service groups, associations and schools took part in a traditional march through the township.
It started at 7.30am led by March Marshal Henry Collins, a retired army sergeant.
Organising the day starts months prior for Wendye Gratton.
Wendye may have organised many Anzac Day commemorations, but each year brings something special.
“We had three schools marching, students came from Marsden State School, Haigslea State School and Minden State School,” she said.
“We always give the kids something to say so they feel a part of it all.”
The service began with the song I am Australian (Anzac version) sung by Lester Knopke.
The MC was Cr Jim Madden and the Australian and New Zealand anthems were sung.
“The song ‘I was only 19’ was sung by Brett Hann with backing music playing off a CD, which made it sound so much more real,” she said.
“Another thing people love is our Anzac biscuits, we have hundreds of those out.
“Local people bring [biscuits] to add to what we put out because we need so many.
“It is a really nice community morning and once it’s over, the horses are brought in and a display of light horse gear set up.”
