Heartless, thieves target charity shop

ON MONDAY someone dropping off goods for donation at a Rosewood charity shop noticed a door had been burst open and entry made, the shop had been robbed.

Joyce Rieck, a volunteer at the Goodwill Op Shop on John Street in Rosewood, said she was devastated to learn the business had been targeted by thieves.

“It is absolutely horrible because the Goodwill shop exists to help people,” Joyce said.

“We are very grateful for all the donations the community supply, we set our prices reasonably and if anyone is in need, we donate to them.

“The person or persons who’ve done this …I doubt very much that they were in need.”

The break in was noticed around 11.30am on Monday when the shop was closed for the Labour Day public holiday.

“[The robbers] have come prepared to break in because they would need tools to destroy the lock and barrel bolt that were on that door,” she said.

“They’ve then gone through the shop, ransacking it and looking for items of value.”

The robbers found a safe and used tools to unbolt it from the wall, taking it with them.

“The safe only had about $200 in it and that’s because it was from our Saturday takings,” she said.

“There’s usually nothing inside it.

“Stealing from a charity shop is a low act, we help those in need.”

Joyce said they were uncertain whether to claim on insurance because there’d be a $1,000 excess needed paying.

“We’ll get quotes for repairs to fix the damage they did,” she said.

“It’s very disappointing that they’ve targeted a place that is not for profit and here to help people.”

Police were called and fingerprints taken, investigations are ongoing.
