Lions donation behind cancer fund drive

A DONATION to the Ipswich Prostate Cancer Support Group by the Rosewood Lions Club will be used to help a cancer survivor’s quest to raise even more money for prostate cancer related services.

Dennis Ellis is the group’s convenor; he accepted a $1,000 donation on behalf of the group from Lions president Michael Golgerth.

“The support group was started in 2004 and I took over as convener around 2017,” Dennis said.

“I was diagnosed with my cancer in 2014.”

He said support group members gave talks on prostate cancer and how early detection was important.

Members go to men’s shed groups and other organisations in the area.

“This year the money donated will help Neville Burke raise money for Prostate Cancer Australia,” he said.

“Neville is taking part in a car rally from Burke to Hervey Bay, our support group is helping him.”

To take part in the rally, the entrant has to donate $1,500 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

“Because Neville is part of our group and it’s what he wanted to do, we are helping him make it happen,” he said.

Dennis and other members of the group do a lot of work in the region where men may not have as much interaction with people.

“We explain to the men and their wives what prostate cancer is and the importance of early detection,” he said.

Rosewood Lions were given a certificate of appreciation from the group as a thank you.

“We give out an enormous amount of money to groups within Rosewood and other districts; the Ipswich Prostate Cancer group was just one of the recipients,” Michael said.

“Our members enjoy helping the community and the different organisations that make this district such a wonderful place to live.”
