A STREET Library was officially opened at the Rosewood and District Community Kindergarten on Monday.
The opening ceremony reflected the depth of community involvement in the Kindy, which led to the long-serving place of learning securing the Street Library, in decorating it and setting it up where it could be easily accessed.
“Earlier this year,” Kindy Group 1 teacher, Debbie Brown explained to the guests, families, children and educators who had gathered for the opening, “our neighbour and well known book lover, Jenny Stubbs submitted a nomination for us through the Children’s Book Council of Australia Queensland Branch to receive a Street Library.
“We were successful in this and in late August we received our library in the mail. “Since that time, we have been busy designing the artwork to be painted onto it to feature this year’s Book Week theme of ‘Reading is Magic’.”
Mrs Brown thanked Ms Stubbs for submitting the nomination and the Children’s Book Council for … “enabling us to provide an opportunity for us to share the importance and joy of reading with our community”.
The two artists responsible for the artwork were also acknowledged.
“Our President and very gifted face painting artist, Skye Petty, along with her very talented mother, Rita White, have both painted our Street Library with a magical and a cultural theme,” Mrs Brown said.
“We would like to thank Skye and Rita for their most beautiful artwork that represents the magic, joy and love of reading through mermaids, dragons, dinosaurs and fairies as well as images of country and symbols for meeting places.”
And she invited the community to make use of and enjoy the Street Library.
“Our aim for our library is for it to be accessible to all and we hope it will be an invitation to share the joys of reading with our community.
“Street Libraries are a window into the mind of a community.
“We invite the community to use this library at any time.
“Books can come and go and no-one needs to check them in or out.
“You are also welcome to donate children’s, teenager and adult books to the Kindy as well to add to our library.”
Mrs Brown also thanked her husband, Wayne, for designing, making and installing the stand for the Street Library.
“We hope our community will embrace and feel free to take and borrow from or even add books to it.”
