LAST Wednesday I happened to be parked in John Street Rosewood, awaiting a passenger, at around 3pm. As I sat watching the world pass me by, I saw something that I believe needs recognition.
We have a vision impaired resident who walks from home to the various businesses, occasionally receiving a helping hand from a local if required.
So, it’s not unusual to see someone with a guiding hand to assist direction or navigating an object on the footpath.
But this time it was two young schoolboys on their scooters, each with a hand on either side of the resident, very slowly keeping their scooters to pace and chatting while navigating other footpath users.
Kudos to these two Rosewood Primary students who I am thinking are brothers, aged maybe around seven and nine, of Maori or Islander descent.
Boys you have represented your school and community with such care but more importantly you have shown your concern for someone else. Not something that is always recognised or acted upon by this (or any) age group. It also says a lot for what has been taught to you at home.
I did make a call to the school to recognise these two but felt the wider community might like to know that we have some wonderful young people in our daily lives though we may be unaware of it.
