A NEW fence has been erected at the Grandchester Cemetery following a successful grant application to the ARTC by the Grandchester Cemetery Trust for a total of $3,100.00.
The state government owned cemetery takes in a total of six hectares.
Grandchester Cemetery Trust trustees completed the project on Saturday, with assistance from ARTC representative Kylie Wendell.
The first burial took place in the grounds on 1896, and at present, many local families visit the cemetery to pay respects to four and five generations of their ancestors.
Rod Hogan, as Cemetery Trust Chairman, leads a group of trustees who are responsible for managing burials, maintaining the grounds and ensuring the surrounds are safe and presentable.
Rod said that he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Grandchester Cemetery Trust in 1991.
“Longest serving member of the Grandchester Cemetery Trust is Vince Stokes who joined in 1969.
“This year will mark 54 years of service [by Vince Stokes], his son Chris who is the secretary and treasurer joined in 2022, to keep the family tradition going strong.
“Grandchester also has a historical link to Queensland Railway, with the first railway line in Queensland that was built in 1865 from Ipswich to Bigges Camp, which is now called Grandchester.”
