Minister declares Marburg races “a fantastic meet”

RACEGOERS enjoyed top day out at the Marburg Races on Sunday.

The event included NAIDOC week celebrations and Winter Carnival status through the running of Racing Queensland’s Constellations series.

The celebrations were opened with a Welcome to Country and a special smoking ceremony performed by Anthony Kemp who was accompanied by Jahmarley Dawson on the digeridoo and Kaylene Bowden with the Leichhardt State School Deadly Dancers.

The performers were congratulated officially by Minister for Racing MP Grace Grace who visited Marburg for the day to “see what country racing is all about”.

Minister Grace said that she was excited to be in Marburg to enjoy a day at the races during NAIDOC week.

“What a fantastic race meet it is here in Marburg, to witness harness racing that is terrific,” she said.

“It is so good to see the children from Leichhardt State School perform and of course the other Indigenous performers here today who have all done such a great job.

“This is my first time here in Marburg and it has been a lot of fun, it really is a great track.

“We have a fantastic country racing package which includes Marburg and we really support country racing.

“I understand that racing in these country areas is often the lifeblood of the community, and it is really special to see so many families who have come out to support them today.”

Alongside NAIDOC week entertainment, children were kept busy with a free rock-climbing wall, face painting and a giant slide while parents enjoyed a cold drink as they watched the races from the side line.

On the day Anthony Collins, Ben Crosby and Denis Smith provided their expert tips for a crowd that numbered more than 1,000.

Major prizes were awarded to the winners of each race with a special sash that was presented to horse Woodlea Diego NZ and driver Narissa McMullen for taking the win in the Western Star 2022 Pace.

A record TAB turnover figure for Marburg was set on the day with a total of over $27,000.

Marburg Pacing Association President Scott Neaves thanked all of the volunteers for their hard work and dedication and all of the families who came out to enjoy the day at the races.
