The Rosewood Detention Basin can store water up to a depth of 5.5 metres and at its peak during the recent flood, the water level rose to 4.5 metres.
The purpose of the detention basin is to hold back overland flow from inundating the Rosewood and downstream of the town.
For those interested in numbers – the retention basin reached a height of 4.55 metres at 11pm on Friday February 25. The water level had fallen below 4 metres by early Monday morning, February 28.
The Rosewood Detention Basin was built by the Ipswich City Council in 2002 and upgraded in 2016 by increasing the height of the embankment by 60 centimetres to cope with larger flood events.
The retention basin’s catchment area is 119 hectares and it has a holding capacity of 128 megalitres.
It is located on the northern side of Rosewood and just upstream of the township at 40 Blake Street, Rosewood. It adjoins Peace Park.
