Volunteers honoured on the Town and Country Volunteers Honour Board

THE Town and Country Honour Board located at the Drakes supermarket in Rosewood has now been updated to commend the work of volunteers within the community.

The board was established in 2006 by former Division 10 Councillor, David Pahlke to acknowledge volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the community through local organisations and groups.

It was originally located in the Division 10 Electoral Office in Rosewood, though when the office closed the then Ipswich City Council Administrator found it to be of no value and the board was destroyed.

Rosewood Lions member David Pahlke said that after hearing this news the Lions approached Division 4 Councillors Kate Kunzelmann and Russell Milligan and Division 1 Councillors Sheila Ireland and Jacob Madsen who then contributed $2,350 to have the board remade.

“We thank the councillors for working with us to bring this board back to life so that we can congratulate our hardworking volunteers who are priceless within our community,” he said.

“In June 2018, we named Jeffrey and Cath Gillam, Colin and Bernice Thompson, Barry and Wendye Gratton, Florence Hopper and Brad Strong as the next volunteers to be added to the board.”

Jeffrey and Cath Gillam were recognised for their contribution through the Grandchester Sawmill, for their involvement with local schools and the Grandchester community and for their involvement for more than 20 years in the Grandchester Model Live Steam Trains Association.

Colin and Bernice Thompson were recognised for their dedication to the environment and conservation matters in the area and for their involvement with Growing Australian Plants, Mason Gully projects, the Rosewood Scrub Arboretum and as members of the Rosewood District Protection Organisation.

Barry and Wendye Gratton were recognised for their involvement in the Marburg and District Residents Association, the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society, the Marburg Show Society, the Marburg Anzac Day services, the Marburg Heritage Centre and many events and services within the Marburg district.

Florence Hopper was congratulated for more than 70 years of service with the Rosewood Country Women’s Association and for her involvement in Divisional meetings as President within the organisation for many years. She was also recognised for her service in catering for numerous events in the district over the years.

Brad Strong was recognised for his service in playing the Last Post on his bugle at commemorative services in Rosewood, for his involvement in the Ipswich Anzac committee and for his tour through Europe where he visited graves of Diggers who came from the area.

“This is a special time to really say thank you to our most recent volunteers who now have their names added to the board to be recognised for their service and contribution to making our community a better place,” David said.
