Reminiscing on the days of travel

TIMES of travel through ancient ruins, historic buildings, breathtaking art shows and memorable places around the world are remembered with fondness by Marburg residents Rob and Janet Krause.

Rob and Janet have recently been flicking through numerous photo albums containing memories of the places they once visited freely before the chaos of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rob said that over the years his family have shared a great passion for travel, exploring the history of Europe, the artwork and natural settings in Asia and the culture of many countries.

“For many years Janet and I would travel to visit our three sons Jon, Paul and David who each spent time living in England,” he said.

“It was a really great time to be able to have the freedom to get onto a plane and visit our family. The days of this sort of travel is long gone.

“I feel for the families who have children, grandchildren, family and friends in different countries at the moment, because there really is no clear answer as to when international travel will be allowed again.”

Rob said that during his time venturing into different places he and Janet went to the National Trust owned Ham House in London.

“Janet’s family name is Ham, there is no connection to this house, but it was great to visit, Janet shared the story of her family name and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour,” he said.

Some of the times the couple treasure include their visits to the Sistine Chapel, the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden Palace, the Colosseum and the Trevi fountain.

“I marvel at the ease with which we were once able to travel. The accessibility to be able to get onto a plane and witness some of the most remarkable and unbelievable destinations in the world.

“We are grateful and very pleased that we have experienced the opportunity to see all of these places, and we hope that one day [freedom to] travel will return so that other families can have the opportunity to reunite with each other.”
