TWO of region’s oldest cemeteries have undergone major upgrades, with more than $3 million invested to preserve heritage and meet future burial needs.
At Tallegalla Cemetery, a $2.3 million project has delivered 311 new burial plots and 156 ashes inurnment plots, along with upgraded roads, landscaping, and new facilities.
The hillside site, first gazetted in 1877, is one of the region’s most historic burial grounds.
Mayor Teresa Harding said the works would ensure the cemetery remained accessible and respected.
“Our cemeteries are sacred places that connect generations,” Cr Harding said. “These upgrades support population growth while also preserving the heritage of this beautiful site.”
Upgrades at Tallegalla included resurfaced internal roads, new car parking, shelters, pathways, and seating, along with a new memorial walking path and amenities block. Landscaping works included the planting of trees, turf and ground cover.
The expansion extended to the north of the site, beneath the existing heritage section.
Cr Harding described Tallegalla as one of Queensland’s most picturesque cemeteries, noting its historical importance with notable figures such as aviation pioneer Sidney Cotton and MLA Henry Morton Stevens who are buried there.
Meanwhile, work has also finished at Stone Quarry Cemetery in Jeebropilly, which dates to 1875 and serves Christian denominations.
In response to community feedback, the council created a new section for Islamic burials, following consultation with mosque leaders.
The expanded area accommodates 358 Islamic burial plots, while also identifying hundreds of additional plots for Christian denominations.
“The Stone Quarry Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the region’s pioneering families from Rosewood, Ebenezer, Jeebropilly and Amberley,” Cr Harding said. “This upgrade ensures those community connections are respected and maintained.”
Nearly $680,000 was spent at Stone Quarry Cemetery on new burial areas, as well as a new internal road, entrance, shelter, amenities block, storage shed and landscaping.
