Antiques and curiosities return to Kalbar

HERE’S a word many won’t have heard … garagenalia, that’s a collection of items related to the history of motoring with an emphasis on vintage and antique pieces.

That and more will be at this year’s Kalbar Antiques and Artisans Fair.

Suzy Baines is the owner of The Emporium in Kalbar and the event’s organiser.

Customers and perusers at The Emporium can tell a creative hand has put the shop together.

A lifetime of finds is laid out wall to wall and ceiling to floor, then there’s her contacts who are well respected in their specialist fields.

Rare finds will be on show and for sale at the Fair, it’s a chance for a mid-year shopping spree to take the pressure off December’s mad rush.

There will be silverware, glassware and pottery, antique tools and yes … garagenalia.

Jewellery and fashion accessories will be on display and (almost) every collectible under the sun.

If you have something you’d like appraised, a panel can do that between noon and 2pm.

Last year an old globe caught the eye of expert appraiser Mike Hillburger.

“It was a fabulous piece, nearly 200 years old,” he said.

“I never saw the base, which needed some repairs, but as it sat it would be worth around $2,000 and with a bit of repair and research it could be a $5,000 to $10,000 piece.”

There will be live music by Ross Weber, an all-day barbeque plus an onsite Wolff Coffee Van with gluten-free donuts.

Entry is $6 a person.

The event is on July 19 from 9am to 3pm at the Kalbar School of Arts, 63 Edward Street, Kalbar.
