Second wettest November in 130 years

NOVEMBER 2024 will go on record as the wettest since 2008 for some areas but for others such as Amberley it beats all records for the past 82 years.

Rainfall comparisons can be a challenge as in some areas Bureau of Meteorology records only date back around two decades, in others such as the recording device on the Rosewood Walloon Road date back 130 years to 1894.

And that is the best one to start with, in our comparisons.

The Rosewood Walloon Road device recorded a rainfall total for November of 345mm. The heaviest fall in a single day happened on Sunday (November 30), when 112mm fell.

That pushed the overall total up and made November 2024 the second wettest in 130 years – it was only beaten by November 2008 when a total fall of 429mm was recorded.

Amberley has another long serving rainfall station, where records have been kept since 1942.

There the record set in November 2008 of 280mm was beaten as 351mm fell during November 2024.

The highest rainfall in a single day also happened on Sunday (November 30) when the rain gauge filled to a smidgeon under 87mm.

Tallegalla experienced the second wettest November in more than 20 years. A total of 312 was recorded for the month. That area’s wettest November also dated back to 2008, when 377mm was recorded.

Franklyn Vale’s weather station has been in operation for just over 20 years and its records showed that November 2024 was the second wettest for the last 30 days of Spring.

A total of 319mm was recorded.

The wettest November since 2001 at Franklyn Vale was in 2008, when 360mm was recorded.

To sum it up, and to compare the totals to the average rainfall for November, we offer the following:

• Rosewood-Walloon Road – 345mm (13.6in) – average 71mm (2.8in)

• Amberley – 351mm (13.8mm) – average 66mm (2.6in)

• Tallegalla – 312mm (12.3in) – average 65mm (2.55in)

• Franklyn Vale – 319mm (12.56in) – average 47mm (1.8in)
