LOCAL frontline emergency responders, volunteers and community support workers involved in the February-March 2022 flood events in South East Queensland may now be eligible for the National Emergency Medal.
The Governor-General, David Hurley, has agreed to a recommendation from the Federal Government that the floods be declared a nationally significant emergency for the purposes of the medal.
The medal will recognise the extraordinary efforts and sacrifice of those who provided sustained or significant service between February 23 and March 3, 2022 across 21 Local Government Areas in New South Wales and Queensland affected by devastating floods.
The Ipswich region experienced the severe impact of the flooding.
“Many frontline responders, volunteers and community support workers stepped up to support flood-affected residents,” Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann said.
“Our brave frontline responders, volunteers and community support workers in my electorate deserve recognition for their support to local communities devastated by the 2022 Queensland floods.
“The declaration of the National Emergency Medal for this event will ensure there is long-lasting, formal recognition for our local heroes.”
Mr Neumann said the medal honours the extraordinary efforts of those who stepped up and provided aid to local residents.
“I encourage anyone who feels a friend, family member or colleague made an outstanding contribution during this time to make a nomination.
“The heroism and community service expressed by these nominees encompasses what it means to be Australian, and this medal is a token of Australia’s appreciation.
“Since the time of the Queensland floods in 2011, the National Emergency Medal has recognised tens of thousands of brave and selfless Australians.”
