AT A Halloween Spooktacular Event in Ipswich, a last minute idea turned into a winning result for two -year-old Horatio and his grandmother Karen Hesketh.
The winning result was announced as part of a Halloween costume competition at the event, where Horatio competed against about 50 other children who were all dressed up as their favourite and spookiest character.
Karen, who lives in Rosewood, described the first place win as just for fun and a small thing to her, but something that meant the world to Horatio who was “super excited from the moment he entered the competition parade to the time he was awarded with his number one prize”.
“Dressing up is a fun thing for children.
“As a grandparent I always go along to support them, as they join other children who all just want to have a great time,” she said.
“Usually, my grandchildren will dress up in something that is bought from a supermarket, but for something different, over the past year, I’ve worked with my daughter in creating many different costumes from secondhand materials at home, for dress up competitions both at school and within the community.
“By using recycled materials, and actually creating something instead of buying it, I believe it is so much more fun, because the children can get involved by helping to cut out, colour, paint and create, from the first step right to when the visualised result comes to life.
“The children learn new skills, while I get to spend valuable time with them.
“We laugh at the many mistakes along the way, we make jokes, and the children learn and see just how much work goes into making things.
Paint on carboard was used for the logos on the bike, the ghostbuster proton pack was made out of old wires, a torch, and an electric drill that no longer worked – in total the costume took four hours to make.
