Stormwater Planning Study for John Street, Rosewood

THE Department of Transport and Main Roads have engaged consulting engineers to complete an initial planning study on possible improvements to drainage and flood resilience along John Street in Rosewood.

The contract is the first part of the $3 million commitment by the Queensland Government to upgrade John Street.

Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden said consulting engineers have previously been engaged by the State Government about projects involving engineering, hydrology, facade, materials, transport planning, flood modelling, asset management and geotechnical solutions.

“This planning study will involve a hydraulic assessment of the corridor that will provide options to address drainage, safety and other concerns raised by the residents and businesses in Rosewood,” he said.

“Following the completion of the study, the recommended treatments will be costed and the department will continue working with the Ipswich City Council to understand the extent and nature of any upgrades required.

“I was pleased to secure $3 million for the proposed upgrade of John Street because of the importance of this street as the main Rosewood thoroughfare.

“This study is good news for Rosewood residents and businesses who have experienced issues during severe weather events, with stormwater overtopping of the kerb, and expressed concerns with regard to the high camber of the section of the street between William Street and Railway Street.

“While the solution to stopping the overtopping of the kerb in John Street during periods of heavy rain is to upgrade the street’s storm water system, any upgrade to this storm water system must be preceded by an upgrade to the Council’s storm water trunk main in Railway Street.

“State government grants are available for the Council to undertake the upgrade of the Railway Street Stormwater Trunk Main and I would be happy to assist the Council in this regard.

“I look forward to sharing the outcomes of the technical engineering investigation with the Rosewood community in due course.”
