The Grandchester area has a new Rural Fire Brigade Station which will serve to boost the district’s fire fighting capabilities.
The official opening of the Grandchester Rural Fire Station took place recently with the involvement of South Eastern Region Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Stuart, Chief Superintendent and Director Regional Co-ordination Alan Gillespie and other members of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden was also there representing Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan. Ipswich City Council Division One Councillor Jacob Madsen also attended.
Mr Madden said the new station would enhance the capability of the brigade’s volunteers in supporting the community in the management of bushfires and other emergencies.
It was also built to accommodate future population growth.
“The station is home to 28 volunteers and cost a total of $384,000,” Mr Madden said.
“It comprises a four bay shed that can accommodate appliances, as well as a training room, office, kitchen, storage area, toilets and shower amenities.
“Of the $384,000 investment, $38,500 came from the Rural Fire Service, $35,000 came from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, and the majority of the remaining funds were raised from local council levies.”
The new station will serve the community well into the future.
“Every bushfire season is a reminder of the valuable work the brigade performs to protect people, animals, homes and businesses from fires and new facilities like this are so important.”
Grandchester Rural Fire Brigade First Officer Donna Jackwitz was recognised during the opening ceremony as the station was officially dedicated to Ms Jackwitz and her service to the community.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart said Ms Jackwitz was instrumental in securing the new site for the station.
“A dedication plaque in recognition of Donna’s outstanding enthusiasm and sense of pride for the brigade was unveiled,” he said.
“This station is a fantastic asset for Grandchester as well as the wider community and I acknowledge the dedication of rural fire Service volunteers in helping keep Queensland communities safe.”
