ON FRIDAY, the first day of the Rosewood Show, the late Elizabeth Boughen was remembered through a memorial challenge named in her honour, the Elizabeth Boughen Youth Challenge Memorial.
The challenge took in three segments – young judges, young paraders and herdsmanship – where points were awarded per class, resulting in the highest combined point scorer being awarded the memorial trophy.
Lilly Wingfield from Durong took out the inaugural Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge by achieving the highest score in all of these classes, and Rosewood State High School won the Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge School Award.
Members of the Boughen family were there to watch the event and shared their gratitude to the Rosewood Show Society and to Chief Cattle Steward Scott Tait, for designing this challenge in memory of Elizabeth.
Noel Boughen, Elizabeth’s father, recalled that Scott Tait first contacted the family after Elizabeth passed away to express his condolences and then he explained the concept of the memorial challenge.
“The family at first was a little nervous about the challenge, but then after consideration we all got on board,” he said.
“This challenge has been a marvellous thing, the support from everybody involved has been very kind, and we have received good comments from the exhibitors.
“It is all about the youth and the welfare of the animals, and everyone who has entered has been spot on, from preparing to enter the judging areas to the parading, it has been fantastic.
“I am proud of everyone and I know Elizabeth would have been also.
“I am emotional when I think about everything and especially my daughter, as she was an exceptional young lady and now to keep her passion and name in a positive light, really means the world.”
