Saving the old Town Crier Board

NOTICES and news were once shared with the community through the loud cries from town crier and Rosewood resident Ken Savage who walked through the main street of Rosewood dressed elaborately to catch the attention of the locals.

Ken said that he enjoyed his role as town crier and that he would share local notices once a week to keep families informed and up to date with what was happening in and around the area.

“With white socks, a bell and buckles, I would walk up and down the main street of Rosewood, shouting ‘Oyez, Oyez’ before sharing the local notices.

“I was the President of the Rosewood Chamber of Commerce at the time and David Pahlke was a member of the chamber as well.

More recently they discussed the idea of installing a town crier board.

“I then approached Rosewood resident Pat Cole, who offered to build the board, which was mounted in the main street for all families to read the local notices from.”

It is currently located on the old National Bank building wall.

“It is important to keep this board going not only because of its history but because it is a talking point in the town,” he said.

“Pat, David and I approached the business owner to explain what the board was all about, and it was agreed that the board will be moved from one side of the front façade to the other, but it will remain on the building.”

Before the board is placed into its new position, it will receive a makeover from Rosewood resident Trevor Halter an outcome that will preserve the history of Rosewood and its people.
